We are keeping it simple and delicious this Valentine’s Day with a family favourite, homemade pizzas!
This recipe is perfect to get your family into the kitchen with you to practice their food skills.
We love a build-your-own approach to making a meal because it allows children to modify their meal with foods that work for their preferences, as well as allows parents to serve new foods alongside accepted ones to promote exposure. Children are also more likely to eat a food they have helped to create.
For meal planning tips, make a few extra pizzas and pack them for the ultimate school lunch the next day.
Don’t have a heart cookie cutter? No problem!
Let your child mark out the shape they want using a fork or toothpick, then cut out their shapes using a knife or scissors. The perfectly melted, stringy cheese is the answer to these little hearts, so don’t be afraid of the mess while making these; it’s part of the fun! We love serving with a side of veggies and lots of our favourite dip (ranch adds a tangy bite or our creamy green bean dip creates a perfect flavour melody)!

Heart Pizza
Equipment
- 1 Heart cookie cutter (or just use a knife if you don't have one)
Ingredients
- Store-bought Naan bread, pita, or pre-baked pizza shells (equivalent to how many pizzas you want to make)
- Tomato sauce or paste
- Cheese, shredded (your favourite variety!)
- Toppings (we used pepperoni & spinach)
Instructions
- Use the cookie cutter (or just a knife if you don’t have one) to press out a heart shaped crust from your pita or naan.
- Spread tomato paste onto crust and top with your favourite toppings.
- Bake on a pan at 425 degrees F for approximately 10 minutes or until cheese starts to brown and is nice and gooey!
- Remove from oven and let sit for at least 5 minutes to not burn your mouth
- Slice pizza as desired or keep in heart shapes
Notes
- Enjoy your pizza alongside veggies and dip (see our green dip for a fan favourite)
- Pre-make or batch-cook mini pizzas for school lunches and experiment with different toppings or combinations of flavours
- Store in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze them to be reheated for a quick after school snack.
- Save odds and ends from leftover veggies, proteins or fruits each week for a homemade pizza night to reduce food waste and explore new and interesting creations.
- Toppings ideas you may not have thought of: dates, prunes, sliced pears, brussel sprouts, bbq chicken, arugula or other greens, grated carrot, walnuts, sliced tomatoes, grated beets or zucchini – anything goes!
- Consider a heart-shaped dessert pizza with Nutella and bananas (5 minutes in the oven so chocolate doesn’t burn)
